Treating TMJ pain | Dr. Oliveros, Dentist in Richmond, BC
TMJ (temporomandibular joint) problems are rising due to high stress levels in the world today. While clenching and grinding of teeth induced by stress or tension can cause discomfort in the TMJ area, stress is by no means the only cause of TMJ dysfunction. Impacted wisdom teeth as well as malalignment of the jaw or teeth can also be contributing factors. Dr. Oliveros has much experience in successfully treating patients who suffer from TMJ pain. The following treatments, among others, are available to patients:
Night Guard
If you are clenching your jaw or grinding your teeth at night, a night guard may help relieve the pressure. A night guard will not prevent you from clenching, but it will provide a cushion of support in between your top and bottom teeth. Night guards can also be worn during the to help remind you not to clench your jaw.
Orthodontics
In cases where malalignment is a contributing factor to TMJ pain, orthodontic treatments may be necessary to bring the mouth into a healthy alignment. Treatments such as braces and Invisalign can help to align the jaw and teeth and improve oral health and function.
Wisdom teeth extraction
Impacted wisdom teeth can manifest as pain in the area of impaction as well as the jaw joint. If you still have some or all of your wisdom teeth and are experiencing pain, it is a good idea to come in for X-rays to determine the position of your wisdom teeth. If impaction is detected, Dr. Oliveros will suggest booking an appointment for removal of the impacted teeth.
Managing stress levels is an important part of any treatment plan targeted at reducing TMJ pain. Reducing caffeine, tobacco and alcohol intake has also proven to be helpful, as these substances can exacerbate grinding, pain and inflammation. Dr. Oliveros will take your medical/ dental history into account and speak with you regarding possible lifestyle factors that may be contributing to your pain. If you are suffering from the debilitating pain and discomfort of TMJ, come see us!

Wisdom teeth | Dr. Oliveros, Dentist in Richmond, BC
Wisdom teeth are something most people have to deal with at some point. If an infected or impacted wisdom tooth is causing pain and discomfort, it is important to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. Symptoms of wisdom tooth impaction include:
- Red or swollen gums, especially in the back of the mouth.
- Sore or bleeding gums.
- Jaw pain.
- Swelling of the gums, cheeks and around the jaw.
- Pain associated with opening or closing your mouth.
A feeling of pressure in the back of the mouth or near the throat can also indicate that the wisdom teeth are trying to erupt. Many people experience these symptoms around the ages of 17-25, but wisdom tooth eruption and/or impaction can occur later in life also. For this reason, it is recommended that most patients have their wisdom teeth removed as soon as possible. This will prevent infection that occur from impacted wisdom teeth, as well as insure quicker healing time. In some cases, if wisdom teeth are left untreated, their eruption can cause shifting and crowding or even infection of healthy teeth.
Dr. Oliveros has great experience in dealing with wisdom teeth removal. Surgery to remove the wisdom teeth can usually be done in one visit. Dr. Oliveros will make an incision into the gums and remove the problematic tooth, in sections if necessary. The patient will generally be under IV sedation for the procedure to ensure comfort. Healing time varies between individuals, but generally one can expect some pain and swelling at the site of the incision for a few days following the procedure. This is perfectly normal, and Dr. Oliveros will prescribe necessary pain relief as well as give instructions on after care.

Periowave™
Our office is pleased to offer Periowave™ to our patients in the treatment of periodontal disease.
What is Periowave™
Periowave is a painless, non-invasive photodisinfection procedure that can significantly improve treatment outcomes when combined with scaling and root planing. Periowave eliminates many of the harmful bacteria and toxins associated with periodontal disease.
Periowave is approved for the treatment of chronic periodontitis, gingivitis, endodontics, and peri-implantitis disease. It is a non-antibiotic therapy that rapidly destroys gram-negative oral pathogens without pain, heat, or surgery.
Unlike thermal lasers that cut tissue, Periowave utilizes a cold (non-thermal) diode laser. It does not cause damage to root surfaces, dental materials, or surrounding tissues. Periowave does not exhibit many of the issues commonly associated with antibiotics, such as bacterial resistance, allergic or sensitivity reactions, opportunistic infections, or prolonged doses of medication.
How Periowave™ Works
Periowave is an effective, minimally invasive, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory treatment. It uses the powerful photodisinfection reaction to inactivate the harmful bacteria and toxins that are left behind after scaling and root planing.
Photodisinfection is based on a simple, two-step procedure:
Irrigate: The specially formulated Periowave photosensitizing solution is topically applied to the gums at the treatment site. It then preferentially attaches to the harmful bacteria and toxins associated with periodontal disease.
Illuminate: A thin, plastic light diffusing tip is painlessly placed into the treatment site. The treatment site is illuminated with a specifically calibrated laser light, activating the photosensitizing solution and destroying the harmful bacteria and toxins. Each treatment site requires only 60 seconds of laser activation, making Periowave a quick, painless, and stress-free procedure.
